Restoration of the facades

The “Pinacoteca Vaticana” is part of the complex system of buildings that hosts the immense artistic and historic heritage of the Vatican, set in the northern part of the State overlooking the right side of the Apse of S. Peter Basilica. The building of the Pinacoteca was unveiled on the 27th of October 1932 and it was designed by the famous Italian architect Luca Beltrami. The façade of the building was characterized by superficial alterations of masonry, plasters and stones, by diffused chromatic alterations, by dust and dirt stratifications and by the acute decay of ceramic decorations attached to the surface. Eng. Nicola Berlucchi has been the scientific director of the contractor (RCS Costruzioni s.r.l.) of the restoration works. On the base of the results of the preliminary analysis and surveys, they had to translate the specifications of the project in to the correct physical interventions on the building. The importance of the site and the specificity of each single operation requested a high level of awareness about the entire restoration process. The specifications of each intervention have been agreed with the work supervisor and with the Department for Restoration of “Musei Vaticani”.
